This session delved into how organizations can harness the insights from patent landscape studies to drive strategic business decisions.    By analysing trends in patent filings from key players, emerging entities, and focal technology areas, companies can identify potential gaps  and whitespace areas ripe for innovation. When these insights are combined with market data, they reveal critical competitor dynamics,  such as partnerships, acquisitions, and the involvement of key industry experts. Key outcomes of landscape studies include:
    • Market Positioning/ Competitive Intelligence: Gain valuable insight into competitors' strategies to refine your own and achieve differentiation.
    • Risk Mitigation (IP Litigation/Overlap): Spots potential IP landmines early, avoiding costly legal battles.
    • Strategic Decision-Making: Helps align IP with business goals, making M&A or partnership decisions easier and smarter with enhanced due diligence.
    • Investment in R&D: Pinpoints tech trends worth investing in, so R&D budget can be planned.
    • Tracking Technological Trends: Updates on the latest innovations to stay ahead of the curve and planning next move.
    • Collaborative or Licensing Opportunities: Spots potential partners or licensing deals to unlock new opportunities for growth.
    • Reducing Time to Market: Identifies gaps and white spaces to find the best tech fast, to bring innovations to market in record time.
    • Scouting Areas for existing technologies: Discovers fresh markets and new uses for existing tech, opening doors to more revenue streams.
The webinar also outlined a few examples in the approach to perform a patent landscape search based on the objective.

Presenter:  Dr. Nigel S. Clarke, Stanfield Clarke Associates
For more than 50 years the European Institutions have tried to implement a single patent system to support the single European Economy. Projects leading to today´s situation have been called at different times; the "European Union Patent”, “The EU Patent", "Community Patent" "EC Patent" or "COMPAT".

The Unitary Patent is none of those things and is strictly the "European Patent With Unitary Effect". This webinar will cover the basics of search examination and grant, country coverage, finding "Unitary Patent" information, and the situation of the Unified Patent Court.

Disclaimer: The narrative is rather dynamic with changes happening all the time so this will be a personal snapshot whilst attempting to be as factually correct as possible.

Categorizing and Visualizing Patents with LLMs

Carl Röst - Head of Consulting at Patsnap

In this session, we compare LLM-based categorization with ML and CPC-based methods. The emphasis is not on the chart type itself, but on how data is bucketed, labeled, and selected to make visualizations more actionable and relevant. The final output takes the form of one of Patsnap’s many visualization options, such as the tailored graph builder in Custom Analysis or 3D Landscaping. The real value comes from a fundamentally different approach to technology categorization at the start.

If time allows, we’ll also show a brand-new text-based alternative, or complement, to traditional patent portfolio graphs. These are designed to deliver the same quick, comparable insights in a new, more intuitive and easy-to-understand format.

          • Teach Patents to Speak Your Company’s Tech Language: Best Practices for Using Custom Fields

This webinar was presented on January 29, 2025

          Presenter:  Andrew Klein, Minesoft
The patent literature is an invaluable resource for understanding technology landscapes and gaining insight into competitors. However, it has also traditionally proven difficult to organize, analyze, and present that “speaks” to people who aren’t patent information professionals.  One strategy for overcoming this difficulty is utilizing custom fields, a feature in many patent research platforms, to overlay a company-specific taxonomy on the standard patent data available. In this session, Andrew Klein, Principal Solution Consultant at Minesoft, will present best practices for using custom fields to make several common patent intelligence workflows easier:
            ·         Identifying prior art for patentability
            ·         Filtering large datasets
            ·         Monitoring/alerting on technologies of interest
            ·        Creating visualizations for analyzing patent data by technology

The Unitary Patent (UP) and the Unified Patent Court (UPC) are now anticipated to go live on 1 June 2023, when the UPC Agreement (UPCA) is planned to enter into force.

In this session, Appleyard Lees partner and patent attorney Julia Gwilt, and head of data and systems Lee-Ann Galway, discussed the key decisions European patent owners will need to make regarding their portfolios in the lead up to UP/UPC implementation, and demonstrated how patent applications can be tracked through the new systems.
