Martha Yates

October 2020 – Martha was recognized for creating a comprehensive patent portfolio database, which created tremendous value to Bayer, through patent marking and licensing activities.

It is my absolute pleasure to present this award to Martha. She will talk in detail about her project: Patent Portfolio Database and Virtual Patent Marking. But before she does that, I would like to read from her supporting documentation provided by James Davis, the US Intellectual Property and Licensing Lead for Bayer Crop Science.

James has worked with Martha for the past 13 years and says that when he started at Bayer, information about an issued patent could only be found on a poorly maintained spreadsheet or on individual attorney dockets.

Martha recognized the need to improve the tracking of patent information & took the initiative to create a comprehensive patent portfolio database, which has created tremendous value to the organization, through patent marking and licensing activities.

Martha demonstrated the unique combination of skills possessed by patent information professionals and the value that they provide. The creation & maintenance of the patent database requires in-depth knowledge of global IP systems and rules, understanding of product lifecycle management and portfolios, and coordination with multiple business stakeholders across IP, R&D, Corporate Strategy and Technology Licensing.
