Same Sequence, Different Invention

A live look at GenomeQuest's Chemical Modification module — built in collaboration with CAS

Searching the chemistry hidden in patented peptides and oligonucleotides

Presenter: Julien Doudement, Principal Solution Architect - Aptean GenomeQuest

Modern peptide and oligonucleotide claims are no longer written as sequences alone, they are sequence plus chemistry: an α-methyl amino acid at position 2, a phosphorothioate every third linkage, a 2′-O-methyl on the seed region. A sequence-only search cannot see any of it, and the number of patented sequences carrying chemical modifications has doubled in six years.

Join Aptean GenomeQuest to discover the Chemical Modification module, built in collaboration with CAS and powered by CAS biosequences content, curated residue by residue from patents and the scientific literature. GenomeQuest turns that data into a search you can run the way a claim is written, using exact positions, floating patterns or occurrence counts, combined with Boolean logic, with or without a query sequence. See modifications drawn directly onto the alignment, filter results by chemistry class or by modification at a given query position, and export the modification summary of any hit in one click.

For patent searchers, IP counsel and R&D teams working on modified peptides, siRNA/ASO, mRNA or aptamers.

Biography: Julien Doudement  is a Principal Solution Architect at Aptean GenomeQuest, where he focuses on designing and delivering advanced solutions for patent searchers. With over 20 years of experience working with life sciences digital platforms, including more than 15 years specializing in patent biological sequence searching, he brings deep technical and domain expertise to the intersection of life sciences and intellectual property.

He works closely with GenomeQuest customers to shape the product roadmap and drive the design and implementation of new features, ensuring solutions align with real-world workflows and evolving user needs.
