European Patent Academy has organized Search Matters 2020, online conference for patent search professionals
14-16 October 2020 (9:00 AM – 1:00 PM CET | 3:00 AM – 7:00 AM ET)
Registration link (
EUR 120)
Note [from EPO]: "The online conference is fully booked. If you wish to be added to the waiting list, please contact: patentevents@epo.org"
Join this year's online conference to gain a deeper insight into how our examiners tackle the complex task of searching the ever-expanding body of prior art.
Search Matters 2020 will deliver its programme in the format of interactive online workshops and plenary sessions, with a special focus on disruptive technologies such as 3D printing (aka additive manufacturing), CII (computer-implemented inventions) and AI (artificial intelligence).
Some of the topics we'll also explore include:
- Advanced features in Espacenet
- Machine translation tool
- Asian prior art
- Interrelated patents and applications
- The problem-solution approach
The full conference program is available at the event page, also as pdf.

The Search Matters 2020 program highlights
Selected lectures:
Plenary 2a: Finding the way in the maze of disruptive technologies/1: exploiting the CPC (Pierre Held, administrator, Directorate Classification and Documentation EPO)
Plenary 2b : Finding the way in the maze of disruptive technologies/2: exploiting Espacenet, GPI and PATSTAT (Johannes Schaaf, administrator, Patent Knowledge Promotion, EPO)
Cf. e-course Overview of PATSTAT Online (September 2019) (56:09, Johannes Schaaf / Geert Boedt)
Plenary 4: On the trail of disruptive technologies, clues from patent analysis (Nigel Clarke, Patent Knowledge research manager, Patent Knowledge Promotion, EPO) [See Note 1]
Selected workshops:
WS02
Advanced features in Espacenet (
Johannes Schaaf, administrator, Patent Knowledge Promotion, EPO)
[CPCI and CPC indexing codes (2000 series) in Espacenet, proximity operators; basic statistical analyses using filter module]
Cf. e-courses New Espacenet: Advanced features (June 2019) (VC-22,1:06:30, Johannes Schaaf and Andrée Lahaye) and Introduction to new Espacenet (January 2020) (VC-02, 1:02:38, Johannes Schaaf and Ronald Feinäugle)
WS03 The problem-solution approach [PSA] - a powerful search tool (Anne-Cécile Derrien, examiner, EPO) [Inventive Step, Closest Prior Art (CPA) and PSA; different steps in PSA resoning; How to focus and refocus a search, using the PSA]
Cf. Search Matters 2019 workshop presentation (May 2019, Anne-Cécile Derrien, 42 p.); see also [EPO] e-leaning course Problem-solution approach: Exercises.
WS04 Patent insight reports: frontiers of additive manufacturing (Nigel Clarke, research manager, Patent Knowledge Promotion, EPO; Björn Jürgens, Senior Analyst, CITPIA patent information centre, Innovation and Development Agency of Andalusia (IDEA)) [In this session you will build your own Patent insight [Patent Landscape] report. You will learn how to identify emerging trends in additive manufacturing, how to create search queries, how to extract , clean and analyse data, and report. You will have hands-on experience of visualising patent data at the frontiers of this disruptive technology] [See Note 1]
WS05 The ABC of search engines (Andrew Thean, examiner, EPO, Stefan Ziegler, examiner, EPO ) [computer algorithms behind document retrieval; choice of keywords, influencing the importance of individual keywords, keyword order, grammar in query construction]
WS06 Lost in machine translation? (Maxime Delaitre, examiner, EPO)
WS12 Access to Japanese prior-art using classification, indexing and citation information (Adam Cohen, examiner, EPO, Christoph Wirner, examiner, EPO)

Note 1. EPO Patent Insight Reports “The methodology underlying these reports is free to use, meaning that anyone can apply our analytical approach to reveal trends and prospects in other future and emerging technologies. For each report, we develop a search strategy, using unique attributes of EPO data such as classification (CPC), citations and patent families. The search strategy is then applied, optimising both recall and precision, to create a technology-specific dataset based on EPO data. The resulting reports act as "snapshots" of emerging technologies, taken in the light of patent data”
Reports:
Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell Immunotherapy (Data); webinar: The patent landscape of CAR T-cell immunotherapy (April 2020)
Quantum metrology and sensing (Data); webinar: The patent landscape of quantum sensing and metrology (June 2020)
Additional webinars:
The patent landscape of Graphene Composite Technology (May 2020)
The patent landscape of blockchain (May 2020)
