Background Information (highlights of previous PatentsScope webinars)
Use of IPC Classification in Patentscope has been discussed extensively, for example, in a webinar “IPC and the PATENTSCOPE search system” (August 2018, see a pptx presentation of 78 slides, no videorecording).
Slides 13 to 23 of this presentation discuss functionality of WIPO IPC database. In particular, slides 22-23 demonstrate parallel view of CPC and FI extensions inside IPC scheme (see, for example, a “live”link to IPC D06F 29/00 extensions [with CPC & FI boxes checked in Tree View options]; see also discussion of CPC/FI parallel view in IPC Publication Help (IPCPUB Version 8.4) at p.19 - ab)
Slides 30-37 demonstrates use of statistics (https://patentscope.wipo.int/search/en/statsIPC.jsf) in “Browse by week” (or last 5 Gazettes) to show global trends/identify main/new actors. (See also a tutorial “IPC Statistics” in a Tutorials collection)
Slides 39-48 discuss IPC Search options: IC, ICI [inventive],ICN[non-inventive] which capture subgroups by default, and IC_EX, ICI_EX and ICN_EX, which do not include subgroups (but could be extended by a wildcard, for example, IC_EX:A61M*, see PATENSCOPE IPC Help)
Slides 55-57 demonstrate use of visualization of grouping by main IPC classes.
Slides 61-64 demonstrates use IPC as one of filters in supervised machine translation in CLIR (Cross-Language Information Retrieval, see also “Supervised mode of CLIR” tutorial in a Tutorials collection)
Use of CPC Classifications has been announced as a new feature Patentscope in February 2020 at webinar “Families, CPC And More In PATENTSCOPE” (see slides (25-35) and/or video recording (16:54 to 20:52), In addition to CPC code field, a CPC code availability field (Is empty:Y/No) is introduced in Field Combination search mode. The CPC data is taken DocDB for PCT applications and from (IP5 + 47 [other national patent offices]) (Slide 29). A special field classif (or "All Classifications") has been introduced to handle a variety of classification input. It islimited to four first classification symbols with possible wildcard extension, for example, CLASSIF:B25J* (see slides 31-35).
It has been also mentioned in the Feb 2020 webinar that FI search in Patentscope would be enabled in 2020]
