    Who should attend:

Anyone involved with patent searching and analysis. Ideal for any scientist, engineer, librarian, patent agent and attorney who does occasional patent searching. Also, a great refresher with useful tips for the professional patent information analysts/manager. Please feel free to share with your colleagues.

    Abstract:

An “infodemic” is defined as an excessive amount of information concerning a problem such that the solution is made more difficult. Knowing how to turn voluminous patent data to usable and reliable patent intelligence is not easy and can result in patent search results “infodemics”.

Democratization of patent search tools with easy access to free and commercial enhanced patent databases has raised the expectation that at least preliminary patent searching can be done by any scientist, engineer, librarian, patent agent and attorney. If executed correctly, advanced AI assisted patent searching or tech mining can assist in a quicker triage of patents of interest. However, minor differences in choice of keywords, boolean search operators, classification codes, value-added indexing, citations, inventor names, original applicant or ultimate patent assignee names, usage of different databases can cause significant variations in patent search results, decreasing their trustworthiness, usability and reliability… It is hard for end-users or beginning patent searchers to have a grasp about the idiosyncrasies of patent data, source documentation or advanced patent search concepts. With malice towards none, the presentation provides a framework for better patent searches using different patent databases. This presentation identifies the common mistakes made during patent searching and the challenges involved in standardization or benchmarking of reports.
