STN Coffee Lecture: AI-based prior art technology in STNext (recording, 17:00, presentation, 9 p.)
Presenter: Paul Peters, ACS International
CAS has developed an AI-based prior art search technology which makes use of the controlled terminology and substance indexing as well as IPC classifications of an initial patent publication that serves as the starting point. The result is a set of closest prior art patent and non-patent literature references published prior to the starting patent document.
Note: CAS Prior Art Search Engine (PaSE) has been originally as Intelligent Prior Art Search (IPAS) for Brazil’s INPI, successfully used to decrease a backlog of pharmaceutical patent application and has received 2021 PIUG The Stu Kaback Business Impact Award. Technology is protected by US10891321B2 “Systems and methods for performing a computer-implemented prior art search”(Issued Jan. 12, 2021) and pending in some other countries (as well as divisional application published as US20210089563A1). See attached a screenshot from the Nov. 3, 2021 presentation demonstrating how PaSE works.

PIUG Patent Classification
Instructor: Stephen Adams, QPIP, Magister Ltd. (UK)
This session will provide an overview to the effective use of patent classifications. The systems covered will be the International Patent Classification and its derivatives, the CPC and the FI systems. You will encounter illustrations of usage for different types of patent information retrieval. There are several mechanisms to enable the user to identify the classification marks which may be suitable for each subject-based search; tools for this will be discussed, relevant to each of the distinct classification systems covered. The revision cycles will be described together with means for keeping your knowledge up-to-date.
