Clarivate: How to think like a professional patent searcher(Registration)
You may never need to perform dozens of patentability and freedom to operate searches yearly, but after this session, you’ll have key insights learned from the experience of a former professional searcher that will enable you to find relevant references quickly and efficiently.
In this session, you will learn how to deconstruct a search topic into concepts, how to develop keyword and classification strategies for each concept for maximum comprehensiveness, and how to combine those strategies for maximum relevancy

WIPO PATENTSCOPE Summer Course -Session 2 (Presentation, 111 p.)
Presenter: Sandrine Ammann , Marketing & Communications Officer, WIPO
This is the second of four sessions of PATENTSCOPE Summer Course. The session include a short introduction and multiple questions to students to be answered during the session. The correct answers are then presented and discussed. The session is for use of stemming, wildcards and fuzzy searches (also WIPO PEARL and CLIR). The first session was held July 7, 2021 and related to Search fields, operators and nesting (see a presentation of the Session 1) . See information on Session 3 and in forthcoming events section below. Questions presented during PATENTSCOPE Summer Course questions is planned to integrate to Patentscope learning platform in September 2021.

STN International: Using the Derwent Manual Codes on STNext®
Presenters: Jim Brown, FIZ Karlsruhe Inc. and Andrew Klein, Clarivate
The Derwent Manual Codes are a powerful tool to be used for subject searching in the Derwent World Patents Index database. These codes are intellectually applied by the Derwent subject specialists, and cover the main inventive feature of the invention, as well as significant applications of the invention. This e-Seminar will explain the hierarchical structure of the Derwent Manual Code system, and will include examples on how to find and search the appropriate codes(s) for a particular search strategy. This e-Seminar is geared to searchers of all experience levels, from the novice to the most sophisticated of searchers.

Sagacious IP [Oveview of Methodology of a Patent Licensing Study] (Recording, 34 min)
In webinar titled “Patent Licensing Strategies in Life Sciences” held July, 21, 2021, Devika Saini, Manager – LSC, Sagacious IP, provided detailed overview of methodology of a patent licensing studies, used by the company to address clients questions on potential licensees and commercialization prospects; competition and market standing, IP valuation and market benchmarking of technology, etc.. Such studies include the following steps (see attached Slide 8): I. Patent Portfolio Analysis (scoring) (Slide 9); II. Market and Technology Evaluation: (1) Market size (Baseline, CAGR1), market share and annual turnover generated by the technology (Slide11) (2) Evidence of use (identifying potentially infringement patents)(slide 12), (3)Alternative technologies (alternative products & competitors, relevant competitors IP, buyers) (Slide 13) (4)Competitors (leading and emerging players) (Slide 14); III.[Own] Patent Portfolio Validation ('competing prior art likely [relates to] product competitors or potential licensees') (Slide 16) ; IV. Portfolio Valuation (Market/Cost/Hybrid approaches). One of case studies discusses preparation of a report to a client for development effective licensing strategy (selection the most profitable patents for a target technology, ranking competitors with similar technologies and determining their potential as prospected licensees) (Slide 18).

Bay Area CHIZAI (IP): The Current State of Strategic Patent Buying and the Patent Market / SPIF
(1)The Current State of Strategic Patent Buying and the Patent Market (Kent Richardson, Richardson Oliver Law Group)
Why do companies buy patents? How do they justify their purchases (and sales)? Who are these companies, what do they buy, and what happens after a purchase? Kent Richardson will be presenting on the strategic rationale for buying, the return-on-investment model that operating companies use to justify purchases, and the current state of the patent market.
You will learn how companies build their return-on-investment models, what kinds of patents they buy, and the prices they typically pay.

(2) SPIF – A Simple Solution to Standardized Patent Identification (Erik Oliver, Richardson Oliver Law Group)
Whether it is licensing, buying, selling, transferring prosecution, or performing research, our industry still struggles with efficiently matching lists of patents from different data sources. For example, if you send a third party a list of 1000 patents, how often is it that they will only be able to match 950 of the patents on the list? Using existing standards, SPIF is a new, open, free, standard, non-partisan, and human readable format for solving this problem. Erik Oliver will be discussing the SPIF solution and how it can help you and how you can become involved.
