Call for Presentations: How can IP and CI information support decision making in the biotech industry?

We are excited to announce the Call for Presentations for the upcoming Joint Biotech Meeting of the Patent Information Users Group (PIUG) and Pharma & MedTech Information (PhMTI), to be held on February 25-26, 2025 at Kimpton Marlowe in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Join us in exploring how the fusion of intellectual property (IP) and competitive intelligence (CI) search and analysis is driving the future of biotech innovation!

This meeting aims to bring together professionals from the biotechnology IP and CI sectors to explore the critical intersection and synergies between IP information (patents, IP sequences, etc.) and competitive intelligence (drug landscapes, clinical trials, research literature) in the biotech industry.

Focus Areas:

In today's competitive biotechnology landscape, the synergy between patent searching and CI is more crucial than ever. As professionals navigating complex patent landscapes and business environments, we need to identify trends, forecast market shifts, and protect intellectual property. This conference invites presentations that explore the integration of patent analytics and competitive intelligence, and how these combined efforts drive strategic decision-making in biotech.  To goal of this meeting is to bring together the searching and analytics community to share best practices and opportunities to better foster interaction and impact.

We invite papers from all sectors involved in biotech patents and CI, including but not limited to:

  • Patent Analysts (corporate or independent)
  • Competitive Intelligence Professionals
  • Patent Practitioners
  • Pharma/MedTech Information Specialist
  • Patent Examiners
  • Technology Transfer Professionals
  • Business Development Specialists

Presentation Topics: We are particularly interested in presentations covering the following areas, though all related topics are welcome:

  • Integrating Patent Analysis into Competitive Intelligence: How patent data can be utilized to track industry trends, assess market opportunities, and benchmark competitors.
  • Patent Searching for Competitive Advantage: Leveraging patent analytics to inform R&D strategies, product development, and entry into new therapeutic areas.
  • Biotech Market Trends: How patent landscapes reveal emerging biotech innovations, regulatory shifts, and new therapeutic developments.
  • Competitive Intelligence Tools in Patent Search: The role of AI, machine learning, and automation in improving patent and competitive intelligence searches.
  • Combination Therapies and Patent Strategies: Identifying IP challenges and opportunities in the growing field of combination therapies.
  • Case Studies: Successful collaboration between patent analysts and CI professionals, and the impact on business strategy and IP protection.
  • Therapeutic Area Deep Dives: How patent information informs competitive positioning within specific areas such as oncology, gene therapy, and personalized medicine.
  • Traditional studies exploring sequence searching, database studies or use cases
  • Use cases:  Examples where patent and competitive information are combine to define an area of interest
·         The use of patent information as a pre-competitive intelligence tool, intellectual property valuation/monetization, in licensing/out licensing opportunity identification, and patent landscaping/trend analysis
·         Practical suggestions to illustrate these themes are as follows:
o   Best practices in constructing patent search strategies, reporting formats, and use of new tools for the organization/management of patent alerts/watches

o    Showcase methods for effective client engagement, user experience, attorney outreach and time management

o    The incorporation use cases in the academic, corporate and other sectors
o    Examples of how a work product supports or is a component of business decisions
·         Approaches to fostering continuous improvement:  i.e., use of analytical &/or visualization applications, implementing quality control guidelines, team collaboration and knowledge sharing practices.

Submission Guidelines: To submit a proposal, please include the following:

  • Title of your presentation
  • Abstract (max. 200 words)
  • Speaker details: name, affiliation, brief biography, and full contact information
  • Presentations are typically 30-40 minutes, followed by 5 minutes for Q&A.
