Abstract:
Whether we are aware of it or not, WIPO Standards have a direct impact on how modern patent documentation is collected, published, collated and distributed, both in free and commercial databases. However, adherence to a WIPO standard is rarely mandatory, and even major offices can differ in their interpretation and implementation of them. This workshop will review the range of standards, not just for patents but other IP as well, in order to give an overview of the field. We will discuss the patent information standards in more detail, and seek to understand how patent information specialists can benefit from the resulting data feeds from national and regional patent offices. Instances where patent offices apply different rules will be particularly noted, and the impact of this on how we interpret database records, and indeed on the record structure in some databases.
